It is with great disappointment that we have had to cancel the 2017 Churches Football Association, Sydney, six a side tournament. In actual fact there has been no decision to make, as the grounds are so wet as a result of the unbelievable rainfall that holding the event is simply impossible.
At 6.30pm on Friday evening, despite considerable rain, we were still going ahead on wet but playable fields, but the next 12 hours has brought so much rain that it is all now completely impossible.
Old timers joke that when it starts raining in winter you know that six a side must be around the corner, and so it is yet again in 2017. The event has a 90 plus year history but 2017 was set to be the biggest event for the last few years with 12 fields ready to be used from 8am until 5pm; an online, real time results system that would have seen all participants completely informed; competition in all age groups, a junior girls team set to really test all of the boys and 3 completely new clubs to six a side soccer.
Obviously countless hours go in to organising an event like this and many of them before the date, meaning that they have already been worked. The Association would like to thank the club’s that entered and those ready to contribute on the day, the referees, coaches and managers set to give their time, Ian and Peter Warwick for the time spent surveying and marking all 12 fields over the last 2 weeks, Dorothy Warwick for now having a fully stocked canteen and vast amounts of surplus stock, Carolynne Wark for her work with the draw and Cumberland Council for being prepared to allow the event to go ahead despite closing every other ground in the LGA.
Very disappointing, financially devastating and very, very, very wet.
Hopefully we will see everybody back for a much drier event in 2018.
